ACADEMY OF NATURAL HEALTH

About the tutor/course
Our course, as well as our general approach to massage, is completely holistic. We believe a client-centred treatment as well as a student-centred course is more effective. We therefore pay a lot of attention to the practitioner’s own development. Our course includes an extensive movement and body awareness training, relationship improvement skills, as well as stimulation of sensory awareness and spiritual consciousness as the context for the more technical aspects of the massage training.

Course supervisor and principal tutor Anja Saunders is a founder member of the Academy of Natural Health, which started fifteen years ago. Anja is a qualified aromatherapist, healer and teacher of the Alexander Technique as well as a professional massage therapist and has a private practice in Central London in which she applies a holistic approach to healing - concentrating on the whole person rather than a specific ailment. She has taught movement, relaxation and body balance on a regular basis for the last twenty years and integrates this experience in the teaching of massage on the courses. She works with a team of creative and dedicated people both on the teaching and the support side who all qualified in massage as well as various other complementary therapies many years ago and are committed to the holistic philosophy of the course.

BODYOLOGY SCHOOL

About Bodyology School
Our aim is to educate students in the science and art of massage so they will be effective, safe and successful massage therapists, who serve their community and help develop the profession of massage.

Our most important advantage is our approach to massage. We teach comprehensive tools and techniques, not simply routines of strokes. Rather than "one massage fits all" we teach students how to think and customise their treatment to the client's individual needs.

Bodyology offers the Student Zone - a set of interactive online lessons, forum, chat room, quizzes, workshops and videos that deepen the classroom studies at students' own pace and time.

About the tutors
Bodyology School is the product of two therapists' professional and personal experience.
Vicky Gaughan has practised psychotherapy and massage for 20 years. Vicky is interested in the therapist-client relationship, psychodynamics and movement practice. Along with teaching, Vicky treats cancer patients in the NHS, and currently is chairperson of the Massage Training Institution (MTI)
Dror Steiner has practised osteopathy, acupuncture and massage for 10 years. Dror is interested in dancing, Reiki, yoga, Pilates and science. Currently Dror is focused on developing new massage diploma training courses.

School address (classes)
Bodyology, (at The Rooms Above), West Heath Yard, 174 Mill Lane, West Hampstead, London NW6 1TB
Office address (for post)
Bodyology, 28B Holmdale Rd, West Hampstead, London NW6 1BL

Beginners Courses
This one day fun workshop is for absolute beginners.
This workshop attracts usually two types of students: those who consider applying for the practitioner course and becoming massage therapists and those who like to have fun by learning to give a great massage to family and friends. The emphasis in this workshop is on practising massage, so prepare your hands!

Practitioner Course
This is the foundation massage course that includes all you need to become a confident qualified massage therapist. On completion, you will be qualified to work in a health centre, clinic or home.

The course spans 9 months and includes 11 weekends (22 days) combined with many activities between sessions.

In every session we combine teaching both theory and practice to enhance the learning experience. For example, learning the muscular system will include the anatomy, as well as palpating and massaging those muscles. The experience of learning in this way is so rich that retaining knowledge is easy. For this reason we strongly recommend studying the theory and practice in the same course.

Every effort is made to create a fun and interactive course. Besides the weekend sessions, we offer plenty of activities to enhance your study experience, using tutors' support and the on-line Student Zone.

Post-graduate Courses
  • Hot stone massage course. This is an advance 2-day course that emphasises the teaching of massage WITH hot stones. Hot stone massage is a creative massage technique, allowing the therapist to massage deeper whilst saving their fingers & thumbs from injury. Once they have experienced a treatment, most clients will be hooked on hot stone massage! We supply sets of hot stones for our students at the end of the course.
  • 'The Better Series' of one-day courses, each of which will enhance your practice on a specific region or subject:
  • 'Better Back' Why does almost everyone in Western civilisation complain about their back? This course gives you a new hands-on solution that massage can offer.
  • 'Better Neck and Shoulders' Do you know why your clients suffer from neck pain and how to help them? Come and learn how to treat and educate clients with neck pain.
  • 'Better Joints' Joint mobilisation, stretches and oscillation techniques to enhance the treatment you offer.
  • 'Better Relaxation' Commonly massage is used for relaxation. Find out how you can improve your ability to deeply relax your clients.

With a fine sensitivity from an early age - working with energy and bodywork in her 30's probably exasperated some health issues, making her extremely sensitive. This has lead her to investigate healing, to understand trauma healing, and healing the WHOLE being.
Her work has a strong link to her own development, via counselling, Psycho-synthesis and Voice Dialogue and through Yoga, dance therapy, Buddhism, Meditation and Qi Gong. Through Energy Awareness and Movement Healing, it became clear that to heal we have to harmonise not just one part but body mind and spirit. - Hence the name Yogic Touch Therapy, Yoga meaning: balancing, harmonising body mind and spirit.
Since 2004 her ongoing training includes NVC (Nonviolent Communication). Including a way of communicating compassionately is the final piece of the puzzle. Brigitte enjoys facilitating in South Africa and Europe and is open to travel to new localities.

The variety of teaching methods is largely experiential and participative. During the course students will practice massage and bodywork on each other, and there will be at least two supervised clinic practice sessions. • Theory of Massage, Body use and Self-awareness: including the development of intuition, sensitivity and intention whilst massaging; looking after the practitioner’s body; use of breath, relaxation and meditation and movement
  • Wide variety of traditional massage strokes and techniques, together with stretching and passive movement. Students will also take part in supervised clinical practice
  • Professional issues and practice management
  • Relationship/communication/rapport with clients; looking also at access for all to massage and training
  • First Aid
  • Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology, taught in a practical and experiential way and related to your massage practice

Dates and Venue
Starting in September and ending in July. We are also considering a further start date earlier in the year. Held in Northfield, Birmingham – tranquil grounds, bordering gardens and a lake. It is not far from the city centre or from south Birmingham motorways.

About the Tutor
Lorraine Horton is the founder and director of Meridian School.

“I am fascinated with the human body and its infinite potential. Training professionally in massage was a natural progression of this fascination. It is clear that there is so much about us that cannot be explained on the physical, mental or emotional levels alone – my interest in subtle energies grew – and this is an integral part of my massage. I continue to explore and study these areas with excitement and passion. It is this passion and love of bodywork that I bring to my teaching – I am very excited about the possibility of supporting others to further explore this for themselves and am privileged to witness their own personal growth and development”

Lorraine qualified in Massage therapy at the London School of Holistic Massage in 1992; in Reflexology in 1998 and in Manual Lymphatic Drainage and Combined Decongestive Therapy in 2003. Her teaching is influenced by dance, movement, exercise and Yoga – and all of her clients! She has taught in adult education; is a Reiki teacher and runs her own well-established complementary health practice in Birmingham; this includes being employed by the Health Service for part of her time. Prior to becoming a full-time therapist and teacher, Lorraine managed a Civil Rights Project for learning disabled people; issues of equality continue to be important and underpin her teaching.

SCHOOL OF YOGA AND BODYWORK

VENUE:
Yoga Haven, Kendal House, Donkey Mews, Brunswick St East, Hove, BN3 1AW

Practitioner course
The main emphasis of this Diploma is to highlight the well-being of the practitioner, in addition to learning the most powerful medium of touch.  Massage has been used around the world for thousands of years to comfort, soothe, invigorate, detoxify, relax, repair, and rejuvenate.  The magic of touch is a sense we all naturally have, and we can explore ways of making it more supportive for ourselves, and all fellow beings.  It is the most beautiful form of communication, which directly allows us access to all levels of a person's being.  The body is not a machine - it is an organic unity encompassing also the mind, emotions and spirit.  Through Holistic‚ Massage, we treat the person as a whole being.  The body is the gateway to deeper levels.  Ultimately, we are not just the body.  It is the most precious gift which, if we love and care for it, can lead us to a wider identification into full consciousness.  We are the resident in the body, we are the Inner Buddha residing in the most miraculous physical form.

During the course students gain a thorough understanding and practice of oil techniques in addition to workshops in: Acupressure, Thai Foot Massage, Energy Work & Relaxation, No-hands/Intuitive Massage, Crystal Healing and Ritual Practice.  Daily Yoga and seated/movement Meditations are integrated into the course to accentuate the importance of the Practitioner's personal development.

As therapists, our own health and happiness is paramount - we can only offer support to others if we ourselves are grounded and centred.  Co-Listening & Oekos (group/partner expression/listening) are also included each day - to sharpen our own awareness, understanding and listening skills but predominantly to allow space and time for each person's journey.

This experience is not simply focussed on a massage certificate, but aims to be explorative, awakening, and above all fun!
