BODYOLOGY SCHOOL

About Bodyology School
Our aim is to educate students in the science and art of massage so they will be effective, safe and successful massage therapists, who serve their community and help develop the profession of massage.

Our most important advantage is our approach to massage. We teach comprehensive tools and techniques, not simply routines of strokes. Rather than "one massage fits all" we teach students how to think and customise their treatment to the client's individual needs.

Bodyology offers the Student Zone - a set of interactive online lessons, forum, chat room, quizzes, workshops and videos that deepen the classroom studies at students' own pace and time.

About the tutors
Bodyology School is the product of two therapists' professional and personal experience.
Vicky Gaughan has practised psychotherapy and massage for 20 years. Vicky is interested in the therapist-client relationship, psychodynamics and movement practice. Along with teaching, Vicky treats cancer patients in the NHS, and currently is chairperson of the Massage Training Institution (MTI)
Dror Steiner has practised osteopathy, acupuncture and massage for 10 years. Dror is interested in dancing, Reiki, yoga, Pilates and science. Currently Dror is focused on developing new massage diploma training courses.

Venue
School address (classes)
Bodyology, (University of London Union Building), Malet Street, London WC1E 7HY.
Office address (for post)
Bodyology, 42 Cannonbury Avenue, Pinner, Middx HA5 1TS.

Beginners Courses
This one day fun workshop is for absolute beginners.
This workshop attracts usually two types of students: those who consider applying for the practitioner course and becoming massage therapists and those who like to have fun by learning to give a great massage to family and friends. The emphasis in this workshop is on practising massage, so prepare your hands!

Practitioner Course
This is the foundation massage course that includes all you need to become a confident qualified massage therapist. On completion, you will be qualified to work in a health centre, clinic or home.

The course spans 9 months and includes 11 weekends (22 days) combined with many activities between sessions.

In every session we combine teaching both theory and practice to enhance the learning experience. For example, learning the muscular system will include the anatomy, as well as palpating and massaging those muscles. The experience of learning in this way is so rich that retaining knowledge is easy. For this reason we strongly recommend studying the theory and practice in the same course.

Every effort is made to create a fun and interactive course. Besides the weekend sessions, we offer plenty of activities to enhance your study experience, using tutors' support and the on-line Student Zone.

Post-graduate Courses
  • Hot stone massage course. This is an advance 2-day course that emphasises the teaching of massage WITH hot stones. Hot stone massage is a creative massage technique, allowing the therapist to massage deeper whilst saving their fingers & thumbs from injury. Once they have experienced a treatment, most clients will be hooked on hot stone massage! We supply sets of hot stones for our students at the end of the course.
  • 'The Better Series' of one-day courses, each of which will enhance your practice on a specific region or subject:
  • 'Better Back' Why does almost everyone in Western civilisation complain about their back? This course gives you a new hands-on solution that massage can offer.
  • 'Better Neck and Shoulders' Do you know why your clients suffer from neck pain and how to help them? Come and learn how to treat and educate clients with neck pain.
  • 'Better Joints' Joint mobilisation, stretches and oscillation techniques to enhance the treatment you offer.
  • 'Better Relaxation' Commonly massage is used for relaxation. Find out how you can improve your ability to deeply relax your clients.

Our aim is to lay a strong foundation in the principles and practice of holistic massage, to a high professional standard. We also aim to have fun! Students will be empowered with strategies for exploring their fascination with the human body. By investigating the 4 principles of awareness, touch, rapport and movement, we can make discoveries and develop our own massage style.

About the tutors

His bodywork has been influenced by such disciplines as T’ai Chi, meditation, dance, Zero Balancing and Process Work. As well as teaching massage in the UK, Spain and Greece, he has been in private practice since 1986 and works at the Bristol Cancer Help Centre. He is closely involved in the development and enhancement of national standards for the massage profession through the General Council for Massage Therapy. She completed two years of post-graduate study, has taught with BCMB for seven years and supervises new practitioners. She has regular supervision herself and is a member of the MTI Practitioners Register.

Sarah Hoare fell in love with massage whilst training with BCMB in 2001. She's been in private practice since then and began teaching with BCMB in 2003. Before embracing the wonderful world of massage, Sarah worked in various teaching environments including secondary school and corporate computing. Apart from teaching children to swim when she was 16, she's never felt so connected with the process as she does now with massage.

Tim Bartlett qualified in 2001 with BCMB and has practised in Bristol since. He widened his bodywork experience by qualifying in Sports & Remedial Massage in 2003, and brings his T'ai Chi practice to his work. Tim began assisting on the BCMB professional training course in 2004 and is now a course tutor and an Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology teacher. He is also a trainer, developing effective support services for people with learning difficulties.

Sarah Cohen trained with BCMB in 2004 and practises in Worcestershire. Involved with massage teaching since 2006 both in Birmingham and with BCMB in Bristol she has been instrumental in bringing BCMB’s professional training to Worcestershire. Sarah came to massage from a career in personnel management and training and running a fresh food retail business. Having trained and worked as a healer since 1997 she now knows that massage practice and teaching is exactly where her passion lies.

About the Tutor
Lorraine Horton is the Founder and Co Director of Meridian School.

I am fascinated with the human body and its infinite potential. Training professionally in massage was a natural progression of this fascination. It is clear that there is so much about us that cannot be explained on the physical, mental or emotional levels alone – my interest in subtle energies grew – and this is an integral part of my massage. I continue to explore and study these areas with excitement and passion. It is this passion and love of bodywork that I bring to my teaching – I am very excited about the possibility of supporting others to further explore this for themselves and am privileged to witness their own personal growth and development
Lorraine qualified in Massage therapy at the London School of Holistic Massage in 1992; in Reflexology in 1998 and in Manual Lymphatic Drainage and Combined Decongestive Therapy in 2003. Her teaching is influenced by dance, movement, exercise and Yoga – and all of her clients! She has taught in adult education; is a Reiki teacher and runs her own well-established complementary health practice in Birmingham; this includes being employed by the Health Service for part of her time. Prior to becoming a full-time therapist and teacher, Lorraine managed a Civil Rights Project for learning disabled people; issues of equality continue to be important and underpin her teaching.

Julie Linton is Co Director of the Meridian School. " After training in basic massage at a local FE college in 2004 I became well and truly hooked. After completing Sports and Remedial Massage Therapy Diploma and a 'chance' meeting with Lorraine, I began training - well it was more of a journey - to become a holistic massage practitioner. Although I continue to discover new aspects of body work and massage, my aim is always to work with client's and as a tutor with learner's with a holistic approach."

SCHOOL OF YOGA AND BODYWORK

VENUE:
Yoga Haven, Kendal House, Donkey Mews, Brunswick St East, Hove, BN3 1AW

Practitioner course
The main emphasis of this Diploma is to highlight the well-being of the practitioner, in addition to learning the most powerful medium of touch.  Massage has been used around the world for thousands of years to comfort, soothe, invigorate, detoxify, relax, repair, and rejuvenate.  The magic of touch is a sense we all naturally have, and we can explore ways of making it more supportive for ourselves, and all fellow beings.  It is the most beautiful form of communication, which directly allows us access to all levels of a person's being.  The body is not a machine - it is an organic unity encompassing also the mind, emotions and spirit.  Through Holistic‚ Massage, we treat the person as a whole being.  The body is the gateway to deeper levels.  Ultimately, we are not just the body.  It is the most precious gift which, if we love and care for it, can lead us to a wider identification into full consciousness.  We are the resident in the body, we are the Inner Buddha residing in the most miraculous physical form.

During the course students gain a thorough understanding and practice of oil techniques in addition to workshops in: Acupressure, Thai Foot Massage, Energy Work & Relaxation, No-hands/Intuitive Massage, Crystal Healing and Ritual Practice.  Daily Yoga and seated/movement Meditations are integrated into the course to accentuate the importance of the Practitioner's personal development.

As therapists, our own health and happiness is paramount - we can only offer support to others if we ourselves are grounded and centred.  Co-Listening & Oekos (group/partner expression/listening) are also included each day - to sharpen our own awareness, understanding and listening skills but predominantly to allow space and time for each person's journey.

This experience is not simply focussed on a massage certificate, but aims to be explorative, awakening, and above all fun!

University of Wales Institute Cardiff (UWIC)

About the Practitioner Diploma course
A professional qualification enabling students to step into professional practice with a good grounding in the skills and principles needed to be a therapist in holistic massage. A person-centred approach to both students and working with clients is an essential part of the teaching. The MTI Holistic Massage Diploma is taught as part of the BSc (Hons) degree in Complementary Therapies at The University of Wales Institute Cardiff, as well as a stand-alone course leading to a professional qualification in Holistic Massage.

Course Structure
The Diploma is taught over twenty four days (one day per week) in an academic year (September - June) as three modules in the BSc, which includes Essentials of Anatomy, Physiology as an additional module.

About the Tutor
Tim Bartlett has been a holistic massage therapist in Bristol since 2001 and in 2003 qualified with APNT in Sports & Remedial Massage. Since 2004 Tim has also taught on the Bristol College of Massage & Bodywork (BCMB) professional training course in holistic massage, and teaches introductory courses in Bristol, Cardiff and Swansea. He has a background in working with people experiencing autism and learning difficulties, including person-centred life planning, training and support, and work with communication and movement differences. He brings T’ai Chi and Chi Kung practice to his work as a practitioner and tutor.

Venue
Llandaff campus of University of Wales Institute Cardiff.
During 2009 the Complementary Therapy Suite was fully refurbished. The area has audio visual and other teaching aides, the latest electric hydraulic massage couches, portable couches and massage chairs, relaxation chairs and separate cubicles.

Further Information
The programme builds on the recommendation by the Prince’s Foundation for Integrated Health that students in this field should learn to combine complementary and conventional approaches to health care.

The three year (full time) or four year (part time) degree course includes professional qualifications in Holistic Massage (accredited by MTI), Reflexology (The Association of Reflexologists) and Clinical Aromatherapy (The International Federation of Professional Aromatherapists). This is supported by learning in the biomedical sciences area of anatomy, physiology, immunology and pathology. Students will explore the relevance of health education as well as psychological and sociological models of health. They will develop skills in research methods and, in their final year, conduct a student research project.

The School runs a Complementary Therapy clinic which is open to the public and run by final year students, who also undertake a ten week community work placement.

Research Opportunities – there is increasing recognition of the need for a strong research-informed evidence base for complementary therapies. Research in the field examines the use of complementary therapies both in the NHS and privately and their role within established medical practice
