Feeling blue this Monday?
The third Monday in January has been known for the last few years as Blue Monday: supposedly the day of the year we are most likely to feel low. Holistic massage can be a great support to mental health and MTI practitioners can work with you to give your mood a boost if you have the winter blues.
- that massage decreases levels of the stress hormone cortisol and increases levels of mood-boosting neurotransmitters serotonin and dopamine (T.Field, University of Miami School of Medicine)
- massage reduces heart rate, blood pressure and feelings of anxiety (C.A. Moyer, James Rounds and James W. Hannum, University of Illinois; Institute of Neurological Sciences, Glasgow)
- massage enhances wellbeing and reduces the perception of stress in healthy older adults living in the community (Sharpe et al., 2007).
When we are in chronic stress, we are operating from the sympathetic nervous system, the 'flight or fight' response and it can be difficult to come out of this response once it is triggered. Massage encourages us into the parasympathetic nervous system, which is the 'rest and repair' state. This is why we often have a feeling of relaxation and let go after having a massage.
