MTI Chair Given Prestigious Teaching Award
The MTI Chair, Earle Abrahamson, is one of the inaugural Fellows of the International Society for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (ISSOTL). Earle is one of nine educators across the globe to receive this award.
It is given to teachers in higher education who embody the values of community engagement, global citizenship, collaboration and who take a holistic approach.
Earle was awarded this for his work as a senior lecturer in Sports Therapy at the University of East London. Earle said of the award: “I was extremely pleased to learn that I was one of the nine fellows. The application process was arduous, but it was fantastic to receive positive feedback and recognition. The competition was fierce and demanding, but I wanted to put myself out there to test the international waters.”
ISSOTL explores how academics use research to inform the way they teach, how they make a change and impact in the classroom and from a management and leadership level. This ties in perfectly with Earle's work in creating a research-minded culture at MTI, his leadership and advocacy for massage at a national level and promoting the benefits of massage to the general public.
One of the judges said of Earle's application: “In two decades of doing scholarship of teaching and learning work (SoTL) work, I’ve never seen a better description of what the ‘making teaching and learning public’ part of SoTL is all about and the transformational capacity that it represents.”
