About the Tutor

Darien Pritchard

Darien Pritchard has been a bodyworker since 1977 and a massage trainer since 1982, influenced by the study of Yoga, T'ai Chi, creative dance and the Feldenkrais Method® of movement awareness. He established massage schools in Adelaide, South Australia and Cardiff, South Wales, and taught on a university degree course. For 20 years, he was a guest teacher on the practitioner training course at the Royal National College for the Blind at Hereford.

Darien was the director of anatomy and physiology tuition for MTI in the 1990s, and served on the British Massage Therapy Council and on the executive of the General Council for Massage Therapy (GCMT).

For three decides, Darien has been a pioneer in focussing on how massage practitioners can protect their hands and body whilst working most effectively. This includes pioneering Hands Free Massage (the skilful, sensitive use of the elbow and forearm to save the practitioner's hands).

In 2023 he published ‘Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology for Massage’ (2nd ed) through Amazon (updating the MTI student text he coauthored with Su Fox over 20 years ago). He wrote the career-maintenance reference book Dynamic Bodyuse for Effective, Strain-Free Massage, due out in a new edition ‘Effective, Strain-Free Massage’ in 2025/26.

Postgraduate Courses

Darien teaches a variety of 1-and 2-day courses in England and Wales. These include:

  • Hands-Free Massage: using the forearm and elbow (with skill and sensitivity) to save the practitioner's hands
  • Rocking the body, rolling the limbs (RhythmMobility): rhythmical techniques for release, flexibility and energising
  •  Protect your Hands, Save your Back and Shoulders (Working Easier, Working Stronger): for effective, strain-free massage
  • Seated Massage: Western-style massage on clothed clients in an ordinary chair and in a portable massage chair
  • A series on Freeing the Shoulders, Releasing the Neck and Releasing the Lower Back.

He also teaches 4-weekend training courses - Advanced Hands Free Massage training, and Advanced RhythmMobility training.
