Why become a CNHC registrant?

MTI Chair Earle Abrahamson lays out the reasons why registering with the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC) has value for our members and what resources are available to practitioners who join.

As MTI chair, and an elected member of the CNHC professional board for massage therapy, I am often asked why our members should become registrants of the CNHC. In this blog I’ll explain the importance of registration and attempt to answer the questions around the value and purpose of being CNHC registered.

What does it mean to be a registrant of the CNHC?

The CNHC has multiple objectives, which work to enhance practitioner status and credibility:

1. Demonstrates you’ve met national standards

CNHC is unique because it was set up with government support to give the public a way to find complementary therapists who have met national standards. It is a voluntary regulator which means that you don’t have to register but when you do, you demonstrate your commitment to professionalism and standards.

CNHC is different to professional associations as it acts solely in the public interest and provides a way for people to choose their practitioner with confidence.

2. Details on CNHC’s UK wide online searchable accredited register

Signing up also means you are visible on CNHC’s searchable online UK wide register. There are currently over 5,200 practitioners from 15 different therapies on CNHC’s register and there have been over a quarter of a million searches since it first opened in 2009.

CNHC’s register has also been accredited by the Professional Standards Authority for Health and Social Care (PSA) which means it has met PSA’s demanding standards – again for the benefit of the public.

3. Use of CNHC Quality Mark

All CNHC registered practitioners are able to use the CNHC quality mark to demonstrate they have met national standards. The mark also shows that you are on CNHC’s Accredited Voluntary Register. Find out more.

4. Access to resources

CNHC provides a range of resources for practitioners to download, including:

  • a CNHC appointment card which you can use as a business card and appointment card all-in-one,
  • - template letters to take to GP practices,
  • - CNHC leaflets and posters,
  • - tips on how to raise awareness of your practice as a CNHC registrant,
  • - template press releases for relevant issues,
  • - advertising guidance.

You can access the resources by logging into My CNHC using your username and password. If you need help you can email or call 020 3668 0406.

4. Recognition by private health cash plan providers

CNHC registration is recognised for reimbursement with a number of private health cash plan providers. This means that clients who are members of the relevant plans can claim for the cost of the treatments when they visit CNHC registered complementary therapists. Make sure you ask your clients to check with their provider before going ahead as this does not apply to all policies. Find out more.

5. Employment opportunities

CNHC registration is recommended or required for voluntary and paid positions around the UK and you can find out more by checking its website and Facebook page.

6. CNHC team

You also have access to the friendly team at the CNHC office who can assist with your registration enquiries. You can reach them by email or by calling 020 3668 0406.

You can find out more under Professional Advantages of CNHC Registration or in the leaflet - CNHC Registration - What’s in it for you?.
